Best wishes for the holiday season from Autism CRC

Our 2022-23 Annual Report marks a new milestone for Autism CRC, our Members, and affiliates. This was the first year post-CRC as the organisation continued our work with, and for the autistic and autism communities, with our collaborative stakeholder model nationally and internationally.

The Annual Report recognises and highlights our activities, outputs and achievements. We continue to advance autism-related practice and policy beyond the CRC program, underpinned by the principles of co-design and co-production with stakeholders.

From all of us at Autism CRC, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season. We hope that you will join us in the New Year as we continue to realise our vision ‒ autistic people with quality of life and opportunity.

Working together to deliver the NDIS

Independent Review of the NDIS Report

Autism CRC welcomes the report from the Independent Review of the NDIS. We commend the Hon Bill Shorten MP and the Commonwealth Government for taking important steps towards delivering a better experience for NDIS participants and securing the future of the Scheme.

We thank the Review Panel and the many tens of thousands of individuals and organisations who have contributed to this landmark Report.

We also welcome the National Cabinet’s recognition of the need for a better integrated ecosystem of supports and the crucial role of the states and territories within that system through existing services, such as childcare, education and health. It is critical that each part of this ecosystem has the capacity to provide evidence-based supports appropriate to assessed need, including supports for autistic Australians and their families.

As the independent national source of evidence for best practice relating to autism, we look forward to continuing to work together with the Commonwealth Government, states and territories, the community and all other stakeholders in delivering that outcome.

New Assessment of Functioning framework

Autism CRC has commenced work to develop an evidence-based framework for assessing, differentiating, and reporting children’s functional strengths and support needs.

The framework will be co-produced with the stakeholder community and will address the current gap in understanding and lack of consensus about how best to assess, differentiate and report children’s functional strengths and support needs.

The findings will inform professional practice, operational guidance, and decision-making, across all states and territories, service and support settings.

Autism CRC AGM

Thank you to those who were able to attend our Annual General Meeting and post-AGM event on 28 November. It was great to have so many people join us in person, particularly during the post-AGM event. We were delighted to host Clare Gibellini, Co-chair of the National Autism Strategy Oversight Council, who gave an enlightening and informed update of the Strategy’s progress.

It was heartening to hear how our work to inform both Strategy considerations and its co-design has flowed through with positive impacts on the Strategy’s development.

George’s Run has raised over $7,600!

Melbourne Metro train driver and driver trainer, George Chijarira, has just completed his solo seven-day Adelaide to Melbourne walk/run/cycle and has raised over $7600 for autism research. The 822km journey was an emotional one for George who had been in training for 3 months in preparation for the big event.

A Zimbabwean migrant success story; George moved to Melbourne just under a decade ago. His seven-year-old autistic son, Jordan, was the fuel behind George’s passion to raise awareness of autism.

In some ways George feels his journey was a metaphor for his life so far; uphill, downhill and then with time to rest and relax in between.
