Happy Holidays from Autism CRC

Farewell 2020!

Despite the challenges of 2020, Autism CRC, its Participants and partners have again delivered a suite of project outputs that are positively influencing autism-related policy and practice across the lifespan and the spectrum. These include the recently released toolkit to help clinicians to implement the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism, which you can read more about below. Others include inclusionED, Autism Teen Wellbeing, myWAY Employability and the Autism Interventions Evidence Report, all released this year.

These and the numerous other outputs over the year – the latest of which are mentioned in this eNews edition – are only made possible by our national collaborative approach and the significant contributions of many. Thank you.

We wish you all a happy, safe and healthy holiday season and thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to taking on the challenges of 2021 together!

National Guideline
implementation resources

A new National Guideline Implementation Toolkit will help clinicians to upskill and deliver the recommendations of the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Australia.

The Toolkit includes learning resources and practical tools such as videos, fact sheets, a Baseline Evaluation and Audit Tool, template forms and training information.

Individuals undergoing an assessment, parents and caregivers can also access community resources that explain the National Guideline and what to expect from an assessment.

Evidence for interventions reviewed

There are many interventions available for children on the autism spectrum. Learning about and navigating these interventions can be challenging for families, clinicians and educators.

Interventions for children on the autism spectrum: A synthesis of research evidence is a landmark report for families, clinicians, researchers and policy makers, which synthesises the best available high-quality evidence about interventions for children on the autism spectrum aged up to 12 years.

Community summaries and overviews for each intervention category are also available.

Awards celebrate quality research

We’re delighted to announce the recipients of the 2020 Autism CRC Awards for Achievement in Autism Spectrum Research. This year’s winning project for demonstrating outstanding commitment to inclusive research practices was ‘The hidden histories of late-diagnosed autistic adults: An oral history study’ (Inclusive Research Award).

The ‘Development of an autism specific quality of life assessment for use with autistic adults’ project was also recognised in the same category, being highly commended.

Can you help us?

As part of a larger Autism CRC project on the Development of an assessment of functioning tool based on the ICF Core Sets for Autism we are currently conducting a study to test an assessment of functioning tool for individuals on the autism spectrum. This assessment tool is designed for health professionals, but we have recently developed proxy- and self-report versions of the assessment. Participants will be provided with a gift voucher for participating in the research which involves completing two online surveys.

Workshop a great success

Our 2020 Future Leaders Program participants recently completed the workshop component of the program over four days online. They are now being mentored by established autistic leaders and completing their practical component. Thanks to everyone involved for a great workshop!

Autism CRC's Sylvia Rodger Academy has delivered the Future Leaders Program in partnership with Aspect in 2019 and 2020.

Photovoice gallery recording

We were delighted by the response to the premiere event of our Quality of Life Photovoice Gallery in November.

This unique research output offers an insight into what affects quality of life for autistic adults, told from their own perspective, through photo imagery and spoken word.

A full recording of the premiere event is now available.
