Autism CRC Digital Art Celebration 2018 - Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in the celebration?

Anyone on the autism spectrum who wishes to participate and likes to express themselves through digital artwork can take part.

Do you have to live in Australia to participate?

Entries are limited to people on the spectrum who live in Australia and New Zealand.

What is the theme?

When creating your artwork, please consider the theme: celebrating diversity. We look forward to seeing how everybody brings this theme to life.

What can be entered into the image category?

The image category is suitable for photographs, digital artwork or any other form of still image that can be submitted digitally, for example high resolution scans of painted artwork.

What can be entered into the freestyle category?

Anything that doesn't fit into the image category but still classifies as digital artwork. Examples include videos, audio recordings (for example, a recording of spoken poetry or prose), animation and so on.

What are the age limits for the age categories?

The first category is for artists 18 years and over, and the second category is for artists under the age of 18.

How many categories are there?

There are four categories:

  • Under 18 years image
  • Under 18 years freestyle 
  • 18 years and over image 
  • 18 years and over freestyle.

Are there any restrictions on file size, length and presentation of submissions?

Yes, due to storage and transmission capacity, image files should ideally be under 20MB and all other files must be below 300MB. 

Images can be either landscape, portrait or square. Although not essential, recommended dimensions are 1,920 pixels on the longest edge and a resolution of 300 ppi. Acceptable file types include jpg, png and gif.

Freestyle submissions should be no longer than 90 seconds in duration. Videos and animations should be in landscape/horizontal. Recommended video file types include mp4, mov and avi. Recommended audio file types include mp3 and wav.

Please include your name in the filename for easy identification of the artwork.

Can I enter more than one piece of artwork?

Yes you can enter as many pieces of artwork as you like. You will need to submit a new form and WeTranfer upload for each artwork submission. 

How do I submit my artwork?

We are accepting submissions via WeTransfer, which is a free file transfer service for larger files. For further details, click here to view the Digital Art Celebration 2018 submission upload guide.

How will my artwork be used?

Artworks may be used in the following ways:

  • included in marketing and communication materials of Autism CRC and our participants, such as websites, emails, videos, postcards, brochures, conference displays and on social media 
  • included in the Autism CRC Annual Report
  • hung in the offices of Autism CRC and our participant organisations.

Can a support worker, parent or guardian assist in the preparation of the artwork?

Assistance can be given to the artist in submitting the artwork via the online process, however it is important that the artwork be created entirely by the artist to ensure that the creativity, diversity and individual perspective of our artists is fairly represented and valued.

Can I submit my entry in person or through the post?

No, entries must be submitted via our online process.

When is the cut off for entries?

Entries will close at midnight AEST on 22 April 2018.

My artwork includes somebody's image. Do I need to get their permission to enter?

Yes, to ensure people's privacy is respected, if you have captured somebody's image in your artwork (and they are recognisable), you must get their permission to enter the piece into the celebration. You will be required to confirm this when you submit your entry.

Are there prizes for participating?

Yes, a cash prize of $500 will be awarded to an artist in each of our four categories. Certificates of appreciation will also be provided to every person who participates in the celebration.

How will you decide who receives the prizes?

Our four prize recipients will be decided by a community vote and a panel of  accomplished autistic artists and creative arts academics. More details on how you can vote for your favourite piece will be posted on our website soon after entries close.
