Paracetamol and autism

You may have seen media this week around the announcement in the United States of America (USA) by the Trump administration claiming that pregnant women’s use of Tylenol, which we call paracetamol, may be linked to autism.

Health policy and practice should be based in the best available evidence from quality research. No major study has found a causal link between paracetamol use in pregnant women, and autism.

In Australia, medicines are regulated by the Therapeutic Good Administrator (TGA). Paracetamol is classified as Pregnancy Category A in Australia, meaning it is considered safe for use in pregnancy.

Australians who are concerned by the statements from the USA should talk to their healthcare professionals or seek support from trusted advisors.
