Supporting student transitions through inclusive teaching practices
Abstract
Transitions are a process rather than a set event. The transition process includes preparing a supporting student for the change, them through it, then monitoring and evaluating their progress and well-being in the aftermath.
Transitions can be big, or the small routine events that happen throughout the school day, such as the shift between classroom activities or learning spaces. They can be challenging for all students, but especially for autistic students. Inclusive teaching practices that remove barriers to learning and consider the needs of students help reduce anxiety, create predictability, and boost student agency and confidence.
