National Guidance for best practice in inclusive education for autistic students
The purpose of this project is to develop National Guidance for best practice in inclusive education for autistic students (National Guidance).
The National Guidance is intended for teachers, educators, school leaders, medical and allied health professionals like occupational therapists, psychologists and speech therapists. Over the past few months we have collected evidence from over 500 research articles and by asking the perspectives of more than 800 people. This has included:
- educators (including teachers, leaders, aides, specialists)
- allied health and medical professionals who support autistic students
- representatives of organisations that support autistic people or inclusive education
- parents and caregivers of school-aged autistic children or youth
- autistic adults who attended school
- autistic students.
This research and lived experience evidence has been used to draft the National Guidance – a set of recommendations that can be used in Australian early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings and schools to effectively create inclusive environments and promote positive social, emotional and academic outcomes for autistic children and youth.
